Customers vs. contacts

What a customer is, what a contact is, and when to add each.

These two are easy to mix up, so here's the short version.

  • Customer is the account you bill and dispatch against, a company (for example, a construction firm) or an individual (a homeowner). One customer can have one site or many.
  • Contact is a person at that customer, like a site foreman or an office manager. One customer can have several contacts, each with their own name, title, phone, and email.

You send invoices and quotes to the customer. You message and call specific contacts.

What you'll see

On a customer's page, the People section lists every contact tied to that customer, with Add contact to bring on another one. A contact can be tied to specific sites, or left open to all of the customer's sites.

If you only have one person to reach at a customer, you still add them as a contact. There's no separate "single contact" mode.

Tying a contact to specific sites is only available in the iOS app. On the web, site-scoping shows as read-only.

If something's not right

  • Can't find a person's info: check the customer's People section, not the customer record itself. Contact-level details (title, direct phone) live there.
  • Wrong contact tied to a site: open the contact and check its site list. An empty list means it applies to every site for that customer.
